Rules and Regulations

PIANO ONLY

  • There are no age or grade requirements.
  • There is no theory test or scale requirements.
  • The teacher decides which level to enter a student.
  • Students do not have to change a level each year.
  • All entrants will play two selections.
    • At the Elementary and Intermediate levels, one piece must be performed from the required repertoire list. The second selection should be of contrasting style and comparable level of difficulty. This may also come from the required repertoire list.
    • Advanced, Junior Virtuoso, and Virtuoso level entrants may select from the required repertoire list or any other piece of comparable advancement. The two selections also should be of contrasting styles. Use of the recommended publisher on the repertoire list is optional.
  • Piano solo students are required to memorize both of the pieces to be performed. Ensembles are not required to memorize their pieces.
  • A 10-15 second planned warm-up is allowed. The warm-up should not be any portion of either selection to be performed; but rather, one should use some form of a scale pattern, chord progression, or an arpeggio.
  • NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE AUDITION ROOMS


Judging/Awards

Judging takes place between 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, 66th and Dodge Street. All auditions are closed (no audience).

Each student that participates will receive an award at the conclusion of each judging session as soon as the judge’s rating is given and recorded. These will be presented in Room 160 of the same building.



Music

All contestants are required to bring the music of both pieces being performed for the judge’s use. Students will not be permitted to perform without their music. Number all the measures in both pieces. The teacher is requested to insert phrasing, dynamics, and tempo markings where none are given. D.C., D.S., or repeats should only be taken to complete a piece properly; otherwise, omit them.

Advanced I - II - III 10 Minutes
Junior Virtuoso and Post High School 12 Minutes
Virtuoso 15 Minutes
Concerto 20 Minutes
(May be played with the accompaniment by the teacher.)


Teacher Entry Fees

A $35.00 studio registration fee is required in order to receive student applications. Checks must be made payable to NSMO or Nebraska Summer Music Olympics.

Entry fees must be postmarked by June 7, 2024. There will be NO LATE ENTRIES. Teachers must submit entries for their students. All money must be collected by each teacher and then one check made out to NSMO sent in with the entries. ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.



Photocopying

Unauthorized copies are an infringement of the publisher’s copyrights and a violation of Title 17 United States Code Section 501. Any unauthorized copies may subject the offending party or organization to civil fines are $10,000.00 and criminal penalties of up to one year in jail.

• If you are going to enter students, you need application and judging forms. In order to receive these, you must mail in a $35.00 studio fee. Make your check payable to NSMO and send this to the mailing address indicated at the end of this page.
THIS MUST BE RECEIVED BY May 25, 2024. NO STUDIO FEES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.
We will email these forms to you. Make certain we have your correct and current email address. Send this on a separate piece of paper along with your check.
  1. Make sure we have the following information: your name, address, city, state, zip code, telephone numbers(s), and your email address (ONLY if it has changed). Your requested information will be sent to you by email.
  2. Choose two (2) pieces for each single student/ensemble team you are going to submit.
  3. Be thinking of working either a.m. or p.m. on Saturday. Every studio must send one worker. It can be the teacher, parent, or a responsible student.
  4. Send in your entries with your preferred work time and one studio check postmarked no later than June 7, 2024, to the mailing address on this page. No entry fees will be accepted after this date.
  5. You should receive your studio schedule of playing times by email with your assigned work schedule by July 1, 2024.
